Born in Malaysia in 1987, Edmund Ooi grew up in a family of tailors. The fact that his mother was a tailor inspired him to continue his journey in the garment industry. During his studies in fashion design in Kuala Lumpur, he was awarded ‘Most Promising Designer’ and ‘Best Avant-garde Designer.’ At 19, he moved to Antwerp in Belgium to hone his skills at the prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts. After two years in Antwerp he started collaborating with Mugler in Paris, which enabled him further develop his unique personal style. In July 2014, he was ready to embark on a personal journey in fashion and launched his namesake menswear collection for Autumn/Winter 2014/15. For his Spring/Summer 2015 collection, he was invited to participate in Pitti Immagine Uomo at The Latest Fashion Buzz in collaboration with Vogue Italia and GQ Italia. A couple of months later he was selected for the Vogue Italia X Elite World Model Look collaboration in Shenzhen in China, where the winner was dressed in his Spring/Summer 2015 collection. In January 2015, Edmund Ooi debuted at Milan Fashion Week, being the third menswear designer to benefit from the support of Giorgio Armani, who hosted the Autumn/Winter 2015/16 catwalk show at his own venue, the Armani/Teatro.
